Description

Leave the city behind and step into village life and interact with the indigenous locals at Pakuri Village, formerly St. Cuthbert’s Mission. Walk with local guides, taste fresh forest fruits, enjoy traditional music and food, try archery, and cool off in the blackwater of the Mahaica river.
A relaxed, authentic Indigenous experience rooted in culture, connection, and calm.

Some two hours’ drive from Georgetown lies Pakuri, a welcoming Lokono (Arawak) village nestled along the Mahaica River — a place where culture, nature, and community come together at an unhurried pace.

On arrival, you’ll be greeted by a friendly local guide and invited to explore the village on foot. This gentle walk offers insight into daily life, with stops to learn about local fruits and medicinal plants, and the chance to sample fresh flavours straight from nature.

A visit to the village craft shop introduces beautifully handmade jewellery, baskets, and carvings, created by local artisans. Purchases are optional, but the stories behind the craft are priceless.

From here, the experience flows to the charming Matapee Cabins, where a traditional lunch awaits. Enjoy freshly prepared dishes, sip cool coconut water, and take in a live performance by the musician behind the well-loved “Matapee” song, along with other village favourites.

After lunch, get hands-on with archery, or learn about the cassava bread-making process, a cornerstone of Indigenous cuisine and heritage, or see how Tibisiri, the straw-like fibre harvested from the Ite palm, is stripped to make beautiful works of art. The journey continues to Julian’s farm, offering a glimpse into local farming traditions and sustainable living.

The afternoon slows along the tranquil Mahaica River. Take a refreshing swim in the cool blackwater or simply relax in a hammock, surrounded by birdsong and the soothing rhythm of village life.

As the day draws to a close, you’ll say farewell to the people of Pakuri and return to Georgetown carrying more than photos — a deeper connection to Guyana’s Indigenous heritage, music, and natural beauty.
